Bukowski seems to favor a pitter/patter pattern of “au contraire” by choosing the obvious and positioning the opposite. He calls our assumptions into question (sleep by night, wake by day, etc.) which is clever but sometimes predictable and boring. Offered in peace, Dwight Lee Wolter

Bukowski is undoubtedly one of my favorite poets. His raw style, yet one of immense sensitivity, has always fascinated me precisely because of that contrast. I even wrote him an epitaph once:
