A brilliant writer indeed, and a man true to his soul. I understand that he owes a lot of his success to his friend Thomas McGuane, another man that is often overlooked and under-appreciated.

Jack Nicholson funded Jim's writing of his novella

Legends of the Fall which was bought and turned

into a film. Harrison hated his short stint at

teaching and turned to Hollywood to make

a living. Most definitely a different path taken from that

of 95% of MFAs who go straight into a university faculty job.

Poetry is what poetry does. Creativity finds us all differently. Some in a cup of coffee. Others at the bottom of a glass of Bordeaux. Trudging through one creek and another to become the river where blood turns to Ink.

Thank you! Jim Harrison’s work captured my immediate attention the first time I ever read anything by him. Never mind attention — captured my heart, soul, all of me. His quest to feel alive imparts that experience to the reader. Don’t miss any of his work. And never mind his reputation as carouser, a man who thinks little of women. Read his finely drawn woman lead character Dalva, in his book by that name. Or the short story “Woman Lit by Fireflies.” I miss him.

thanks for sharing your thoughts on why we write - it is as necessary to me as breathing, to 'write as an act of worship' for all that is, that has been and will come to pass. Thank you. By the way, we Scots write 'whisky' - there is no e

I've always loved Jim Harrison, his writing and his person. Now i am old, very old, and i have lost track of the writers i admire. I am not even sure if Harrison is still alive, and i do not understand this Substack business. So many questions.

I write because the voices in my head keeps growing louder.

Awesome, and a powerful piece of writing.

"Novels and poems are the creeks and rivers coming out of my brain." this is a wonderful sentiment, alluding to the natural rhythm of creative expression. I like the idea of allowing whatever's inside to simply flow out of you. Great piece.
