Katie, When i was in high school I read that when asked, a writer [the only thing I’m sure of was that he was French because the name escapes me] the question ‘what do you do?’ He said “Moi, j’observe” which blew up in my head as the single essential job of a writer. Still think so.
I wonder how appalled, or not, Miller would be, if he somehow returned to America for a spell and watched CNN and FOX and read online a bit about America? Would he engage the madness, or would he head to a cave somewhere and hang out there for so long as he could bear being here again?

It's a blessing for girls to be merely pleased with us, like grandchildren. bossing us around, scolding with amused severity, kissing our foreheads as if scratching us behind the ears, dogs on taut leashes wagging our tails, thinking dizzily, I'm a good dog!
