Amazing. No one should say what poetry "ought to be". It's all about vision, and perception, and expression, so if there are restrictions, then whatever comes out will be a fabrication of the self. I loved this one.
Awful that this guy is gone. I like his stuff and this is the first I've heard of him. I can't relate to 95% of the MFA poets and Kassel is right for taking them to task. Much MFA poetry is, to me, like Jackson Pollock art. pretentious, Incomprehensible and fake. If you don't get it, that means you're stupid. Well no, it's (the art, the puzzle poem) that's stupid.
He tackles head on the misinformation and mistakes made by some readers (including a few poets) who somehow think that poetry is only genuine when it’s painful. There are others on the opposite end of the spectrum who believe that all poetry must be fully flower laden, heartfelt (with emphasis on felt as imitation material) or religious.
Neither are correct as the poet so diligently points out. A poem can easily be full of jokes because, if it isn’t, what do we call a limerick?
I so agree with the previous comment by David Zoll... "Very nice. Started out like a snowflake and ended like an avalanche, rushing down the mountain taking everything in its path." Thank you SO much for sharing!!
Yes. I agree. Only thing is, I wish he didn't use Naugahyde in his poems. The once might herds of Nauga's are gone forever because of humanity's insatiable hunger for their wonderful hides. When will we learn?

One of the things I appreciate about Poetic Outlaws is how I get introduced to amazing poets whom I’d not yet discovered.

From little seeds big trees grow.
Well done, the poem resonates with me
Just love it!
I love it. It speaks to the heart of this banal, phony poet.
