"Be the inferior of no man, or of any men be superior. Remember that every man is a variation of yourself. No man's guilt is not yours, nor is any man's innocence a thing apart."

This is a beautiful expression and reminder that all things are interconnected, or "inter-are," as Thich Nhat Hanh would often say. We need this now just as much as at other critical times in human history.

Thank you for the offering on this Saturday morning. 🙏

Robert Frost once that poetry was "a way of remembering what it would impoverish us to forget." And that's the case for a lot of the greatest and timeless literature.

Thanks for sharing.

"Remember that every man is a variation of yourself. No man's guilt is not yours, nor is any man's innocence a thing apart." Great lines. It reminds me of "No Man is an Island" by John Donne (1572-1631), about 400 years old now; a short poem that gave the English language two famous sayings. (I'm not sure how he predicted Brexit all that time ago, but anyway), here's the full text:

No man is an island,

Entire of itself;

Every man is a piece of the continent,

A part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea,

Europe is the less,

As well as if a promontory were:

As well as if a manor of thy friend's

Or of thine own were.

Any man's death diminishes me,

Because I am involved in mankind.

And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;

It tolls for thee.

“Despise evil and ungodliness, but not men of ungodliness or evil. These, understand. Have no shame in being kindly and gentle but if the time comes in the time of your life to kill, kill and have no regret.”

Kindness and gentleness are diametrically opposed to weakness. Actively choosing weakness is immoral, it takes strength, dignity, and hard work to be kind and gentle to others. Choose strength, be kind.

I remember a generation that said ‘live fast, die young, leave a good looking corpse.’ The motto and fatalism of being readied for war.

Here’s to no more of that.

For some reason this makes think of the philosophical saying "Know thyself." This piece has much to talk about that I will not enter into any here, but that it is full of meaning, it is true.

Good read!
