It is such a powerful poem, with every word seeming to vibrate with importance, that it IS hard to say what the essence is! Thomas, like all of us when we're paying attention (or if we can pay such close attention) is describing being overwhelmed by the power of life. That in the face of such power and beauty he cannot stop nor even talk about the meaningless things he does even whilst awed by this magnificence. He has no control (not does anyone) over the intertwining (so dense as to be never unwound) of the wondrous and the mundane; the quick and the dead of this life that we are. We live but we are also just observers of life.

Why thank you, Devin! I love Thomas and taught him in a literature class many years ago!

Why is he “dumb” to speak of these things? Is he just ending each stanza with how futile we are to try and manipulate these forces in our lives?

Maybe by being dumb, he's unable to say it?

Poets such as he are born and fashion themselves into greatness.
