Resigning from our instinctive-idealistic childhood to a world created to endure the development of our nerve based conscious mind has surely been hell on earth. To be quite honest, I see heroes at every turn. Yes, heroes! Because surely having to live with the mind condemning our moral instincts in order to learn how the world operates has been torture. And to get out of bed each day and face that condemnation while the whole world seems against you had to be the most difficult task.

Understanding the Instinct vs Intellect explanation being the root cause for all the suffering is the most dignifying and healing explanation!

Hello, Anthony. It’s a revolutionary idea brought forth by biologist Jeremy Griffith. He explains that since we now have the ability to understand how the brain operates and how genes are a dominant part of our makeup that were adopted over thousands of generations, …to be honest, he explains it much better than I can. There’s a website where you can understand it better. I will give you the link. Humancondition.com

things got pretty dark in his Zibaldone…

“Everything is evil. That is to say everything that exists is an evil;

each thing exists for an evil end; existence is an evil and made for evil; the purpose of the universe is evil; the order and the state, the laws, the natural development of the universe are nothing but evil, and they are directed to nothing but evil. There is no other good except nonbeing; there is nothing good except what is not; things that are not things: all things are bad.”

Leopardi didn't write in English -- so doesn't the translator deserve a credit line? Also, why not include the Italian original for those who can manage it? Italian isn't exactly a rare or exotic tongue!

It's hard to keep you good folks happy in this day and age. People who are curious enough to read it in its original tongue, I'm sure, will find it and read it.

It isn't 'in the face of',rather it's BECAUSE of suffering. My take on him.
