I made a mistake on the source of this poem. Got it confused with a future post. My bad. This is a stand alone poem and I'm not too sure which of his works it was published in. Sorry about that. But the "The Prophet" is still a must read.
I have about twenty books by Gibhran, but I couldn't tell you which one it's from either, but it's a wonderful stand alone poem, and a very fine choice indeed.
In this poem Gibhran embraces defeat ... the ultimate defeat of being alone and unwanted with nothing but his own songs and silences. Then he shows us how this is only the beginning of his journey to becoming a full spiritual person with the inner resources to be dangerous and unconquerable. Gibhran was wonderful. He had a wonderful way of seeing the trials and tribulations of this world from the perspective of eternity, and man's ultimate purpose on this earth. He also had a wonderful way with words!
When I first read this years ago, my first impulse was to print it off, frame it, and hang it on the wall above my desk. It was the right thing to do. This poem changed my life. A magical piece of insight.
Timely in a country broken by Populist Far Right Tories. Roll on a Labour Landslide ( fingers crossed!!) or a coalition with the Greens… and let us be proud of a country which becomes truly democratic, in which state education and health is properly funded. Jinny
"Defeat...my solitude and my aloofness, my self-knowledge and my defiance, my shining sword and shield, my bold companion, my deathless courage...we shall be dangerous." -- Beloved seer, Kahlil Gibran

Yes, I can understand that. It is a life changing poem. His works are very profound, beautiful and insightful .
Yes! :)
Defeat was published in a book by Khalil Gibran in 1918 by Alfred Knopf and titled “The Madman: His Parables and Poems”. Daniel

Wow! I’ve never seen nor heard this poem by Gibran. To stand on one’s own.
I fell in step with Gibran's prose from the moment I laid eyes on The Prophet, in my tender youth, when I was "swift of foot".😊
You won’t understand victory until you eat a great portion of defeat^^
How one can embrace defeat and make a beauty out of it.
“Life is to be lived, not controlled; and humanity is won by continuing to play in face of certain defeat.”
—Ralph Ellison
I loved the photograph. I struggle with poetry.
I agree - The Prophet was a must read when I graduated from high school. I had not read anything so moving before.
This is a gorgeous stand alone. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏼
