"If we will have the wisdom to survive". I love the way the poem seems to give this in the balance throughout.

A guidepost and warning couched in beauty. And so profoundly consoling.

I love the poem. Wendell Berry always pulls the curtain back to give us just a taste of the heaven beyond.

This poem makes me think of the river valley where myself and my family live. We take care of the land and try to be good stewards to it in order to leave a beautiful legacy for our future generations to come.

Touches my mind and my heart…

Strong and gentle and hopeful…

I weep tears of relief…

Knowing possibility…

We ignore, destroy, and attempt to conquer trees at our own peril. The lives that might live beyond us will not be without trees. Period. The hardship is its own reality.

“The lives our lives prepare”--such a healthy attitude. Nice to read something so hopeful in these dark times.

Such a lovely poem. It reminds me so much of feeling at home when I'm happy and halo Homer Winslow. I had a lop eared Bunny for a while that was house trained and not to chew on wires. I loved that Bunny.

always reminded me of Dickey and Faulkner. Still alive. Never read any of his novels.

The novels are good, but some of the short stories might even be better. “Fidelity,” and “Pray Without Ceasing.”
