I see this poem as a little hymn to freedom - having the freedom to pick and eat a nectarine - an act all too easily taken for granted. Also having the freedom not to punch a clock in card.

Freedom is beautiful, isn't it Martin?

Yes, it is. And did you you notice the subtle way Tommy mentions a 'Ukraine farmer'? Can you imagine what it must be like if some depot tried to take your land from you - literally take your means of producing a nectarine?

Reminds me of this poem which is perhaps overexposed but still beautiful. And he's a Jersey boy like me.

This Is Just To Say

William Carlos Williams

I have eaten

the plums

that were in

the icebox

and which

you were probably

saving

for breakfast

Forgive me

they were delicious

so sweet

and so cold

Had the best nectarine of my life last night. The perfect combination of sweet, tart, and drip down your chin juicy. And woke up to this! How can this not be a great day! Thanks Tommy!

I too ate perfection-in-nectarines this week...and organic as a bonus.

A nice ode to fresh nectarines.

Frankly I prefer peaches

And warm and sunny breaches.

No better fruit I have seen,

Peaches for me over nectarines.

You’ve distilled some of my favorite things here… and this is exactly how nectarines make me feel. I hope I’m reincarnated as a nectarine tree. Thank you for this😍

Nectarines, cherries, sweet heaven, you’re grateful your chin is covered in their sticky flavor because it coats your lips, washes into your mouth, and down your throat after you’ve splashed cold water onto your face, not truly hoping it washes it off.
